American Garage Door - Blog

Nearly two-thirds of all homeowners use their garage door as the main entryway into their home. That means that this door - likely the largest opening in your home - is working overtime to let you and your family in and out of your house.

Ensuring the integrity and safety of that garage door is, then, something every single homeowner throughout Greater New Orleans must consider. On average, as many as 30,000 injuries occur every year involving a garage door. Here's how to make sure you and your family don't become a part of that statistic.

Look closely at your garage door cables

Just think of the frequency in which your garage door opens and closes each day. Now consider how large and heavy that door is! Your cables go through a lot of stress over their lifetime, controlling the doors for your convenience.

That's why you should regularly inspect the cables that attach the spring system to the bottom brackets on both sides of your garage doors. Look out for any signs of fray or hints that the cables are worn down. Those that are not in top-notch condition are in danger of snapping, which can cause serious injury.

Inspecting your cables is actually one of the things we do at American Garage Door when we perform our 14-point preventative maintenance program. If you do decide to inspect your cables on your own, keep in mind that replacing cables is a job best left to a trained technician.

Make sure your garage door is equipped with a safety reverse system

Long ago, garage doors were rather basic systems. They had two jobs: open and close. These days, you can find garage door systems that will not fully close if something is obstructing its way. For example, if a child's toy is left on the ground, rather than crush that toy, the garage door will sense the obstruction and reverse back into an open position.

This system is a lifesaver, which is why the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA) requires these systems, and has since 1993.

Avoid this common mistake!

A large percentage of the 30,000 injuries that occur each year involving a garage door are at the hands of some type of system malfunction (with the cables being a chief suspect).

But we can't place all the blame on the machine. Human error makes up yet another large percentage of these yearly injuries. Namely, many homeowners place their fingers between the sections of their garage door to close their door.

This is a huge mistake. Theses sections are designed to seal tight once the door is fully closed. All too often an unsuspecting homeowner will pull down their garage door, not realizing how fast the door can move. Before they know it, their fingers are pinched between two massive sections.

Sure, most garage doors are automatic these days, but chances are you'll have to manually close your door at least a few times. That's why your garage door should have handles for you to use.

Keep your home and family safe by taking advantage of a maintenance program

Your garage door is one of the areas of your home that you pay little mind to, until something goes wrong. That "something" could either be a costly repair, or a disastrous accident.

Neither have to occur if you join a yearly maintenance program like the one offered at American Garage Door of Louisiana. As one of the heaviest moving objects in your home, your garage door needs special care and attention to ensure it's in prime working condition each time you use it.

Our 14-point maintenance program examines, inspects, and addresses every aspect of your system, including:

  • Lubricating rollers, pulleys and cables
  • Adjusting springs as needed
  • Tightening all nuts and bolts as well as the chain
  • Providing insight into any safety concerns or repairs that may be needed

There's no reason why you need to be one of the 30,000 people who are injured (or worse) at the hands of your garage door. Learn more about how American Garage Door can keep you and your family safe, all year long. Contact us today.
