American Garage Door - Blog

When leaving the house to go to work in Covington, Mandeville, or New Orleans, most people remember to lock the front door, back door and to secure the windows of their residences to prevent intrusion. Yet, many people are oblivious to the vulnerability of burglary through one area that seems most safe; namely, residential garage doors.

Although garage door openers present a tremendous convenience to get in, they can also be one of the most susceptible areas to break-in. Many people are just impervious to the fact that the cord or lever is the point at which you can raise and lower the garage door manually, if need be. This is only remembered at times such as power outages or if you were to lock yourself out of the home accidentally.

Thieves know this. All it takes is a clever and experienced burglar to use a clothes hanger or wire to trip the lever and then lift the door manually, which happens in many home robberies. How can this be prevented?

Here are some ways to make your Louisiana garage door area and home safer:

  • Lock the lever. Some garage door levers have a pre-constructed hole that you can run a thin wire or cable tie, but if not, you can also drill a small hole to make it impossible for thieves to use that “coat hanger” trick to get in.
  • Cover the visibility. While away, make it preventable to see in through the windows in the garage, either by choosing frosted glass panes or by putting up curtains.
  • Install a wireless, remote garage door keypad or front door keypad. If you don’t have the code, you cannot come in. This is also great for people who are prone to misplacing their keys.
  • Never leave the garage door opener in the car. If you have an automatic opener that you can activate from your car, this convenience can also pose a safety issue. The thieves can simply press a button to get into your home. Some couples have two garage door remotes – one for each car – so if you happen to be away and leave the other car out, this is one easy way for an intruder to get inside the home.
  • Lock the entrance from the garage to the inside of your home. Many people think that because the garage door is closed and the other entries of your home are locked, then that should be enough. However, the doorway to the garage should also be locked because if the burglar can get into the garage and the door to your home is also unlocked, then this is a very easy way to break in.
  • Install motion lights and security cameras. Aside from the locking of the garage door, you should also deter theft by installing security systems such as cameras (even if not working they do scare burglars away), and motion sensor lights.

Being smart about your garage door entry requires knowing how thieves think. Scout out your home, including the garage area and other exterior passages. Windows, sliding glass doors, garage doors and both front and back doors should be locked at all times.
