American Garage Door - Blog

Most homeowners throughout Greater New Orleans understand the impact insulation has on keeping their house warm during cold winter nights.

But it's more than likely that most homeowners throughout Southeastern Louisiana fail to consider the impact of having an insulated garage door. That's because garages are typically a non-conditioned space that no one lives in. You don't pump heat or AC into your garage; why then would you waste your money with an insulated garage door?

But insulating your garage door can have a tremendous, and positive, impact on your life and living space. Here's why:

1. Protect your car

It can get pretty cold down here in the Greater New Orleans area. Sure, it's not arctic cold like in the Northeast, but the temperature drops low enough to cause car problems. In fact, we're not immune to having temperatures fall below freezing.

If the temperature outside is 20 degrees, the warmest your garage will be - if you don't have an insulated garage door - is 30 degrees. That's still below freezing, making it difficult to start your car, ATVs, mowers or other motorized toys.

If, however, you do have an insulated garage door, then while it's 20 degrees outside, it may be as warm as 42 degrees in your garage. That 12-degree differential will make an enormous impact on how quickly your car can start - and warm up - during cold winter mornings.

2. Keep your house warmer with an insulated garage door

Is your garage attached to your home? If so, then your home may be losing tremendous heat (or cold air) thanks to your leaky garage.

We call this the vestibule effect. Think of restaurants or retail stores that have a vestibule entrance area. This slightly insulated vestibule acts as a buffer, keeping out unwanted air.

The same can be said for your garage. When you have an insulted garage door, your garage can then serve as a buffer, or vestibule. Less cold air will travel into your garage door and, in turn, your home will remain protected from this unwanted air.

If you have a living or conditioned space above your garage, then this space will also benefit greatly from the vestibule effect created by an insulated garage door.

3. An insulated garage door is built stronger

The denser polyurethane that makes up an insulated garage door actually strengthens your door. People always underestimate the amount of abuse a garage door endures. Whether it's a ball being tossed against the door or accidental bumps and bruises, an uninsulated pan door simply can't handle this type of impact.

Insulation adds rigidity to the door panels, helping them not only withstand greater moments of impact, but also helps them cope with the stress of constant raising and lowering.
