American Garage Door - Blog

Isn't it interesting how quickly the role of your garage shifts from car storage to everything storage?

You're not alone. Homeowners throughout the Greater New Orleans area use their garages as a place to house their tools, cleaning products, seasonal gear and, well, let's face it, junk. There are two main reasons why we tend to do this:

  1. When we store things in our garage, they're not taking up room in our actual living space
  2. We tend to be less concerned with the cleanliness and upkeep of our garages, meaning it's okay if things get a little bit dirty or cluttered

Obviously, having a clutter-free garage is important if you store your car there. But even if that's not the case, decluttering your garage helps keep you organized and ensures your garage is a safe space. Here are four tips we've designed to help homeowners throughout Southeastern Louisiana declutter their garages, while still using that space as the perfect storage center that it is.

1. Overhead storage for your garage

Even if you have a cramped garage space, chances are you have some room to work with vertically. Overhead storage units are a great, budget-friendly alternative to building a loft. These storage units can be as simple as suspended shelving just above your garage doors (meaning, when the door is open, your storage is out of sight!).

2. Organize your garage with slat walls

Slat walls are one of the cleverest ways to declutter your garage, while still using it as a storage center. Retail stores are known to use these types of walls to keep items off the floor yet easily within reach. The beauty of these slat walls is that you can find hooks of all types to fit within each slat. For example, if you want to hang up a snowboard or heavy lawn chairs, you'll have no problem finding a hook for that.

3. Using pegboards in your garage

An alternative to slat walls is the age-old pegboard. The simplicity of the pegboard is its greatest asset: you likely won't find a cheaper solution to declutter your garage. Pegboards can hold just about any tool or item for your garage workspace and makes for the ideal solution if you use your garage as a workshop.

4. Built-in cabinetry

Are you looking for a more permanent and substantial garage-organization solution? Then built-in cabinetry is the answer. Yes, it's the most expensive solution of the four outlined here, but it's well worth it if it's within your budget. Not only will your garage look immaculate, but your stored items will be protected and less likely to cause injury to anyone who comes into the garage.

How do you keep your garage organized?

As the most trusted name in garage door installation throughout New Orleans, we know that most of our neighbors use their garages for so much more than a car storage. Heck, we do too! But that doesn't mean your garage has to turn into the scene of an upcoming episode of Hoarders. Whether you use one of the solutions we've discussed above, or have your own ideas, we'd love to hear from you!
