Just because your garage was built for the purpose of storing your car, doesn't mean it has to stay that way. Particularly here in Greater New Orleans, where expanding your home's footprint can be tricky, many homeowners in the area are choosing to convert their garage into an extra, fully furnished, room.

Is this the right option for you? Here are a few tips to help you turn your cold and drafty garage into one of the best rooms of your entire house.

Start with the door, of course

One of the biggest challenges in converting a garage into a formal room is knowing what to do with your oversized garage door. You have a few choices. For starters, you could replace the garage door with two doors that fold into one another. Your other option is to infill the old garage door, so that the opening space is a bit smaller and easier to convert into a standard door. To do that, you'll want to match the existing exterior.

You also may want to consider removing your driveway and adding landscaping in its place, so that the new room really seems natural with the rest of your home.

Speaking of blending in ...

You'll likely spend a considerable amount of time making your exterior door blend with your home; but you also want to make sure that the interior blends in as well. That means matching colors and construction styles.

Choose its purpose based on traffic flow

Perhaps you want to convert your garage into a recreation space, but is that really the best fit for this space? Often times, it all depends on traffic flow.

For example, do you have to pass through a bedroom to get to your garage? If so, then you probably don't want to convert that garage into a recreation area.

In the same vein, you may not want to convert the garage into a bedroom if all other bedrooms are on the complete opposite end of the house.

Level your garage floor

Garage floors typically slope toward the door, and many have a step down from the interior entrance door.

You'll want to fill that in to bring the floor up to the level of the interior door. Your goal is to create a smooth transition from the house to the new living space, with no steps down.

Even here in New Orleans, you need to insulate your converted garage!

Perhaps you already have your garage insulated, with drywall on top of that. Great! Skip this step. But if you aren't so fortunate, then you need to get your walls insulated. Don't forget your wiring and plumbing needs before closing up those walls.

Install a heating/cooling system

If you have an attached garage, then you have the benefit of extending your system from the house into the new living space.

If you don't have that option, then electric baseboards, space heaters or wood heaters could be effective options.

Adding windows

Chances are your garage isn't outfitted to be lived in. That much is obvious with the types of windows in that space. You'll want to add a few windows to gain as much natural light as possible, without compromising your privacy.
