American Garage Door - Blog

Unlike so many things that are made today, garage doors are designed to last. The average garage door installed in New Orleans can last up to 20 years, if not longer.

But despite the durability of the average garage door, it's still necessary to perform regular maintenance to maintain the expected lifespan and to ensure your garage door will remain reliable.

Summertime is one of the best times for you to do some DIY maintenance to keep your garage door in tip-top shape for the rest of the year. Here are a few simple tasks you can do during these warm New Orleans summer days, that'll keep your garage running smoothly.

First, test your door

Before you delve into your DIY garage maintenance session, we suggest you simply test out the garage door first. Open and close the door and examine how it operates. Does it make strange noises? Is it moving smoothly? These observations will provide the groundwork for the rest of your efforts.

Check for visible signs of wear and tear

Inspect the hardware around your garage for any wear and tear. Look for loose hinges, a misaligned track, and missing bolts. This inspection might take all of 2 minutes, but any modifications you make here will help your door open and close without issue.

Lubricate your hardware

Just like most large, moving objects, your garage door needs lubrication. This lubrication will eliminate loud noises and protect your hardware from extensive wear and tear. Make sure you use a 3-in-1 type of oil (avoid using grease).

Insulate your garage door

We don't have to tell you that New Orleans can get mighty hot and humid. By adding insulation, you can keep this hot air out, while keeping your cool air inside.

Reinforce your door

Other than intense heat, New Orleans is also home to some pretty severe weather. We suggest you reinforce your garage door to protect it from hurricanes and other extreme weather conditions.

Remove rust

Do you have a steel garage door? Make sure you remove visible rust by sanding the damage, applying a primer, and painting over it with exterior latex paint.

While you're at it, you might consider painting your entire garage door. Before you do that, we suggest you wash your door to remove dirt, grease, and grime. You can use a mild household detergent.

Painting your garage door (either the same color or something bold and different) will help it look like new, and will keep it shining for at least another year, if not longer.

What if there's a bigger issue with your garage door?

It's not uncommon for homeowners in the Greater New Orleans area to stumble upon a larger issue when inspecting their garage doors. If you're not sure what to do as you examine your door, your best bet is to call the professionals.

Many garage door repairs are minor in scope; but you could cause more (and costly) damage to your door if you try to fix the issue on your own.

Luckily, the team here at American Garage Door is on standby ready to help you with all of your garage door needs. Whether you need a new garage door, or help repairing your current one, give us a call to see how we can help you keep your home safe, secure, and beautiful.
